This is what it looks like to those of
us fortunate enough to be able to read:
About 42% of adults in Maine
are functioning at the lowest levels of literacy.
Many
Maine adults cannot perform basic tasks such as completing
a job application, balancing a checkbook or reading a
newspaper. An inability to read is often
accompanied by depression, stress, and a lack of self
respect. Inadequate reading skills often
result in limited earning power and underachievement.
We train volunteer tutors who
assist adults in improving reading and writing skills.
Each
adult learner is matched with one tutor who provides
one-on-one, individualized training. Our tutors meet with
their students on a weekly basis and help them develop
literacy goals such as getting a driver's lisence,
balancing their checkbook, and helping their children to
read and do homework. The skills these adult
learners acquire enable them to become more equipped in
the workplace and to function better in our society.
