The
Waterville Area Affiliate of Literacy Volunteers is the
only local non-profit
provider of free, confidential, one-on-one
reading instruction for adult learners.
We believe the ability to communicate effectively by reading, writing,
speaking, and listening is critical for making good personal choices.
Increased literacy skills help our adult learners to build stronger
families, be more productive in the workplace, and participate more
fully in their neighborhoods and communities.
We
train
volunteer tutors who assist adults in improving reading and
writing skills. Each adult
learner is matched with one tutor who provides one-on-one,
individualized training. Our tutors meet with their students on a
weekly basis
and help them develop literacy goals such as getting a
driver's lisence, balancing their checkbook, and helping their children
to read and do homework. The skills these adult learners acquire
enable them to become more equipped in the workplace and to function
better in our society.
Literacy Volunteers of Waterville is
affiliated with Literacy
Volunteers of Maine
and ProLiteracy America/Worldwide. We have
been serving the Waterville area for over 35 years, and were
incorporated in 1973.
